Department of Unusual Ordnance Finds: The Answer.

Yesterday we posted information about an uncommon battlefield ordnance find in Syria that had been shown to us as packaging containing land mines. They were not landmines, as that post explained.

So what were they really? As best as we can tell, with as high a degree of certainty as is possible without opening the package (for fear of booby traps) to confirm that the contents match the Russian-language label, each of these disc-like packages contained four increment charges for World War Two-era Soviet 120-mm mortar rounds. Not an everyday find. 

What's a mortar increment charge? It is the disc or bag of low-explosive powder that attaches to a mortar-round tail boom (or sometimes its fins) to add velocity (and therefore range or height in flight). By adding increments, mortar teams can methodically extend range out to a system's maximum. The bottom two images show variations on this idea, but are not a match to the charges presumably within the aged packaging at top.

Several of you sent in the right answer, and we made some new friends in the process. Well done. My favorite answer, though, was: "Looks like cheese."

(That, or the note from a gentleman formerly of a European Special Forces career who reminded that these kinds of charges are very good for [unprintable due to safety reasons.])
